The band was not impressed by songwriter John Carter's singing, so Slay chose Greg Munford, a 16-year-old friend of the band who was from another group called Shapes of Sound, to sing lead on the track. The song was initially released as a B-side by Thee Sixpence on All American Records, owned by Bill Holmes, the band's manager and producer. The first and most famous Strawberry Alarm Clock single was "Incense and Peppermints", produced by Frank Slay. The post-Strawberry Alarm Clock incarnation broke up before any success was realized. There were probably 10 songs in all that were recorded but Bunnell stated that both masters were stolen. There were two recording sessions with some of these personnel, one with Dave Hassinger at the Recording Factory and one with Bill Lazarus at Sunset Sound. However, according to Bunnell, many Strawberry Alarm Clock songs came from the band he had formed previously with Seol, Bartek, Randy Zacuto, Fred Schwartz, and Criss Jay, which performed under the names Waterfyrd Traene (pre-Strawberry Alarm Clock), Public Bubble (during Strawberry Alarm Clock), and Buffington Rhodes (post-Strawberry Alarm Clock). ![]() The inception of Strawberry Alarm Clock aside from Thee Sixpence is not well documented, largely because none of the latter band's recordings (subsequently lost) were released. Randy Seol (drums, vibes, percussion, vocals) and Mark Weitz ( keyboards, vocals) joined to replace the departing Gunnels, Rabe, and Luciano just as the name change to Strawberry Alarm Clock was occurring. According to Bird, the creation of Edna took the notion of superheroes wearing designed costumes "to a further extreme". The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to earn a PG rating Edna is considered to be one of the studio's earliest attempts at approaching " darker, edgier comedy," which is particularly demonstrated by the scene in which the character cites several graphic examples of capes directly resulting in the deaths of several superheroes, one of whom is shown being consumed and killed by a jet turbine. The director elaborated, "The way I saw it, the costumes had to be created by somebody with a scientific and engineering background", thus conceiving Edna as "a half-German, half-Japanese, tiny powerhouse of a character". ![]() Therefore, Bird decided that if the world was populated with superheroes, there would naturally also be people responsible for designing their costumes who must also have a background in science and engineering, thereby envisioning Edna as a scientist and technical genius in addition to being a fashion designer. The director wanted to debunk the trope of muscular superheroes sewing their own costumes, finding it hard to believe that superheroes would suddenly develop a strong enough interest in fashion and textiles to design their own outfits. Bird conceived Edna upon discovering that, despite featuring characters dressed in fancy, extravagant costumes, traditional superhero films rarely offer plausible explanations as to how superheroes come to obtain these outfits, or who provides them in the first place. Having watched several superhero-themed films and television shows prior to developing The Incredibles, Bird had often found himself wondering who is responsible for making the superheroes' elaborate costumes. ( Lily Tomlin, his choice, told him he was best.) The director understood that, in addition to fashion expertise, the character would need to demonstrate proficiency in science, engineering and technology in order to create costumes capable of withstanding the trials of superheroic activities, and ultimately conceived her as a short, confident character of both German and Japanese descent based on these countries' reputations as small yet powerful nations. Bird also decided to voice the character himself after several actresses originally considered for the role failed to replicate Edna's unique accent. What they are doing is rare, amazing and spectacular. The dyers, from Pinotepa de Don Luis, are the last traditional shell dyers on the planet. It could take the milking of up to 1000 Purpura to color just one purple reboso and as indigenous culture becomes more integrated and as traditional dresses become more expensive fewer younger women are wearing them. ![]() Although no longer worn routinely, these skirts are still held in high esteem by Mixtec women.Ī genuine posahuanco not only confers status, the Purple color is associated with fertility and many women of this region continue the tradition of being married in one of these garments. This traditional skirt has bands of dark, indigo dyed cotton, purpura dyed cotton and red silk. Today it is used only by the local women who weave it into either a “ reboso” (a shawl worn over the shoulders) or a “ posahuanco” (a wrap around skirt traditionally worn by coastal Mixtec women). Historically cotton dyed with purpura was traded as far away as Costa Rica. This is making the dye more expensive and hence less competitive, especially in a market including synthetic dyes and fabrics. At one time the shelldyers were able to dye several skeins of cotton in a day, now they are lucky to complete just one. Unfortunately the population continues to diminish due to fishermen poaching for seafood. With an average life span of about 11 years the prognosis for their survival is positive. Purpura snails from this region are recognized as a national treasure and are protected by the Federal Government. What is so unique about this dye, making it so sought after, is that the fabric does not fade with exposure to the sun but the intensity actually deepens over time. The cotton strands first turn yellow but with prolonged exposure to the sun and oxygen the color transforms, as if by magic, to turquoise then blue and finally purple. By pressing just on the right spot, each snail releases their milky white liquid directly onto the skeins of cotton before being cautiously returned to their hiding place. Purpura shells are well camouflaged within the rocks of the inner tidal zone but shelldyers are expert at identifying them and gently lifting them out of the water. was expelled from Mexico and harvesting of the dye became strictly controlled. In 1988 the purpura became protected by the Mexican Federal government, Imperial Purple Inc. Within four short years many of the grounds were severely depleted or completely barren. The fishermen hired by this company harvested year round, handled the shells roughly and were careless about replacing them to their former resting place. nearly decimated the purpura population on the entire Pacific coastline. Unfortunately in the early 1980’s, a Japanese company called Imperial Purple Inc. By not harvesting dye during mating season, careful rotation, gently milking only the mature shells and painstakingly replacing them onto the rocks, they were able to conserve the species over several centuries. The ancient Mixtec shelldyers understood that the purpura regenerates its ink. One important difference between the Mediterranean Murex and Purpura is that the former had to be killed to extract the dye, eventually leading to its extinction while the snail found on the Pacific Coast can be milked and released back into the sea. The snail of the Americas is commonly known as “Purpura” and was used for centuries to obtain the same rich shade produced in Europe. Due to its scarcity many cultures reserved it for royalty and in more recent years the shade has been referred to as “Royal Purple”.Ī close relative of the Mediterranean murex was found along the PacificCoast from Ecuador to the Baja. It took some 12,000 snails to extract 1.5 grams of tyrian purple dye and Aristotle reported that it had a value of up to twenty times it weight in gold. Ancient civilizations mentioned this dye in texts dating back as far as 1600 B.C. In Europe, murex snails were found in the Mediterranean and produced a color which was named “tyrian purple” by the Phoenicians. The subtropical and tropical environments are hubs where the sand flies carrying parasite are developed. Leishmaniasis is caused by a group of leishmania parasites, it is further transmitted to humans through infected phlebotomine sand fly. Since there is requirement of novel drugs to fight drug resistance and relapse of leishmaniasis, this article may pave way to understand the importance of micronutrients and their role in therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniasis. Vitamin D, C, zinc, and iron are proved effective in inhibiting the growth of leishmaniasis in both amastigote or promastigote forms, either directly or by acting as precursor for a pathway which inhibits the parasite growth. This article elucidates a new perception to the crucial role of micronutrients and their probable role in the therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniasis. The intensity of leishmaniasis can be influenced by body mass and micronutrient availability in the blood. Malnourishment can exacerbate host sensitivity and pathophysiologic intensity to infection in variety of ways, whereas infection can enhance underlying poor nutrition or enhance host vulnerability and sandfly's urge to attack specific hosts. Malnutrition has been recognized as a poor predictive marker for leishmaniasis, in particular the deficiency of trace elements like zinc, iron, and vitamin A, B, C, D which has a prominent function in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity, cell proliferation, human physiology, etc. Altered resistance to infection and host susceptibility are associated with low micronutrient levels in undernourished patients. The factors associated with poverty like low income, ecological factors, and malnutrition cause disruption in immunity and host defense increasing risk of infection.
